SINCERE GRATITUDE FOR

WHAT OUR HEROES HAVE ACHIEVED

The Day of Valor, officially known as Araw ng Kagitingan, is a Philippine national holiday commemorating the fall of Bataan to Japanese forces during World War II. It is observed on April 9 each year, though it was moved to April 6 in 2009 to avoid clashing with Maundy Thursday. Prior to the 2000s, the celebration was known as Bataan Day because of Bataan's importance in World War II. The holiday is observed in Maywood, Illinois, in the United States, where it is known by its previous name.

But why is it important to commemorate it? Because it is not only a commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan, but also a remembrance of the Filipinos' courage in fighting and giving their lives for the country, even though the country's defense "collapsed" in Corregidor, Bataan, on April 9, 1942. This occurred during WWII, when Japan sought to occupy America's allies, including the Philippines. To prevent Japanese soldiers from invading Manila right away, the country established a robust defensive in Corregidor, backed up by Filipino and American troops.

On April 9, we would remind all Filipinos of the heroes who battled for us so that we would not fall, just like AFP spokesperson Marine Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo said “It’s a day of reflection for every soldier, airman, sailor, and marine on how our forebears and Filipino Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor demonstrated to the world its brand of extraordinary heroism, ardent patriotism, uncommon valor, and selfless sacrifice,” Arevalo said. “With their blood, sweat, and tears, our veterans bequeathed to our generation the air of freedom we breathe, the atmosphere of peace we live, and the democracy we enjoy,” which means that the selfless heroes who died — those who fought through blood, tears, and sweat and used their strength and love for the country to fight — are the ones to be remembered on April 9; they are to be admired and proud because they did everything they could to ensure that we did not fall.

The learners should still be taught about or discussed the day of Araw ng Kagitingan. It is important to study them so that we can remember the good accomplishments performed by our heroes in the fight for our country's independence, as well as the good Filipino attributes we can be proud of in the eyes of others. Let us also remember to pray for the Filipino and American soldiers who died fighting the Spanish, and we will be eternally grateful for their sacrifices in the name of our country.
