Significants of Ylocos Sure

The Kannawidan Festival is the main festival in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. In fact, “kannawidan” is an Ilocano word that means heritage or tradition. The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival is held every February 2 and lasts for six days. It was started to strengthen the Ilocano culture, to recognize the Ilocanos who have brought honor to the province of Ilocos Sur, to celebrate the bountiful harvest of the current year, and to celebrate the spirit and culture of Ilocos Sur. Various festivals are prepared every year.


This celebration is important because it boasts the products of Ilocos Sur, the fruits of the bountiful harvest, the beautiful buildings and attractions visited by tourists, the fruits of Ilocano art in art, music, design, and dance, as well as traditional foods here. This festival showcases the culture, history, tradition and spirit of Ilocos Sur. Just like this year’s Kannawidan Ylocos Festival 2022, Ilocanos are happily celebrating this year. Since the Covid-19 Pandemic is not over yet, we still have safety protocols such as wearing a Face Mask and no Vaccination card. No entry. This year, the officers had a lot of activities. One of these is the concerts of bands, influencers, artists and others. There were also drawing contests, boxing, and beauty pageants called Saniata ti Agtutubo.


Kannawidan Ylocos Festival became an annual festival that aims to create awareness on the preservation of the province’s rich cultural heritage, practices and traditions, and a showcase of the different agriculture and industry products of the province. The celebration is considered as the prime festival of the province and is a visual and is a feast for the indigenous costumes, dances, and songs, religious rituals, cook fest and trade fairs that showcases distinctly Ilocano products and to and to be proud of what Ilocos Sur is.
